5 Things You Should Know About Guinea Pigs and Apples
Recently whee were asked on Twitter ‘Can guinea pigs eat apples?’ and with it getting to that Autumnal time of year when hoomans enjoy a good apple pie (as Sammy from One Spoiled Cat reminded us when he said his hooman was making one!) whee thought whee would do a blog post answer!
In short; yes!
Like hoomans, whee guinea pigs enjoy most types of apple.
However anything you hoomans don’t like, whee probably won’t probably like. (eg. sour apples like crab apples) Whee are also not keen on unripe apples as again, the flavour is a bit sour.
Things to think about before giving a guinea pig apples
- Apple seeds/pips contain cyanide and can serious upset our insides so make sure they are ALL removed before giving us any.
- Apple leaves are pretty nommy and whee can eat small amounts of them. However they are high in calcium so don’t give us too many.
- Whee have very small mouths so please chop apple up into small pieces so they are easier for us to digest
- Apples are pretty acidic so please only give us small amounts once a week as otherwise whee may get sores in our mouths and on our lips
- Like anything, too much of a good thing is bad for us. Apples are more of a treat than anything else.
Whee have an orchard near our new Hutch that whee can send the hoomans to and they bring us a little treat back sometimes!

I’m terrified of giving my lot apples because of mouth sores but very, very occasionally they get a little bit 🙂
It’s a lovely treat. Mummy only lets us have it once a week or so or a little piece when she’s eating an apple but that’s it really. Everything in moderation!

Fascinating information, as always, B. In this case, Mom treats me like a guinea pig. She only gives me tiny pieces of apple once in a while. Wheek! Wheek!

Very interesting. The sheep love apples but for them they are a treat too. They may not eat too many apples either.
Whee are pretty clever and we can usually tell when whee have eaten enough of something. Whee are sure the sheeps are the same ^_^

Not really. Once they broke into a barn where a big bag of dried sheepfood lay. They ate lots of it. And when I found them, two of them couldn’t walk alone anymore. Sheep have very complicated stomachs and if they eat too much, they can’t breath anymore. Luckily it wasn lethal, I lifted them up and made them walk around. But it was quite close. Either sheep are stupid (don’t tell Brad) or their digestive system is. If they eat too many apples they get different problems from too much carbohydrates.
