Small Pets Matter!!

Do small pets matter? That is the question asked over on Blog Paws to celebrate Small Pets Month.

This answer is furry simple. You bet whee matter! Fellow small animals, our day has come. Be you ferrets, guinea pigs, birds, fish, snakes, insects, rabbits, gerbils, hermit crab, snail or anything else for that matter you are part of the movement whee belong to that is redefining the definition of what a “pet” is.

No longer does pet cover only dogs and cats. Us “exotics” as whee are known are far less exotic than whee used to be. Visit any pet shop and you will see the choices of foods, habitats, play things and information have grown considerably. As the Blog Paws article says:

We aren’t just shopping for basic and essentials for small pets: We are competing in photo contests, dressing them in clothes, blogging and writing about them, and we want our due day. We are pet parents, no matter the pet.

Looking up the statistics to back the growing popularity of small pets whee found this site about the UK households breakdown of pet ownership in 2013. It included these amazing figures.

  • Fish kept in tanks: 20 – 25 million IMG_0051
  • Fish kept in ponds: 20 – 25 million
  • Rabbits: 1 million
  • Caged birds: 1 million
  • Domestic fowl: 1 million
  • Guinea Pigs (That’s us!!): Half a million
  • Hamsters: Half a million

This compares to the dog and cat figures of:

  • Dogs: 8.5 million
  • Cats: 8.5 million

It’s impressive when you see it like that, right?!

So small pets, today is our day, (not specifically this Thursday but you get the pigture) to rise up and take over the world, take the world by force storm and become even more popular!

What is your favourite thing about being a small pet owner and why do you think small pet ownership has risen so significantly in recent years?

Have a great Thursday efurryone

  1. We’re not surprised you small pets are getting more and more popular – such great ambassadors too 😀

  2. Hehehe we are just the best Aren’t my piggy friends?xx Speedy

  3. My daughter is easily scared by larger pets and their sudden movements but looooove the guinea pigs. They are easy to handle, live to be petted and the worst they can do is pee on her.

  4. Great post and be us big or small we all matter. Have a tremendous Thursday.
    Best wishes Molly

  5. Well small pets DO matter – – some of my bestest buddies are SMALL……!!!

    Hugs, Sammy

  6. I am the smallest pet Mom has ever had, except for the hamster, Buttercup that lived in her classroom when she was a teacher. Buttercup was beloved and his antics were legendary. Great small pet information, Noah!

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  7. As a mummy to two bunnies, I think all small pets matter, too! I honestly love pets of all sizes. Have a terrific Thursday! 😊😊😊 xoxoxoxoxoxo

  8. All pets matter! We loved our hamsters and teeny goldfish.. 🙂 And we now have a teeny tree frog that vists our front porch.. we love him!

  9. Here here!!! Well said!!!!! I am so glad Blog Paws is doing this. You are right. Small pets need to be recognized as well! I have 3 huskies and 3 kitties but I have always ;loved hamsters, ferrets etc…Thanks so much for coming by my blog today to see my feature on Clowie. So great to meet you!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!

  10. I agree 100%, all pets matter to the families. Big or small, one and all. As you know, I have kitties and we love them. If I couldn’t have them, I’d love a little Noah or Basil or even a budgie bird. We’ve had birds and Hamsters as kids and we thought they were awesome. Lot’s of rentals don’t allow cats or dogs, so small pets are a good alternative. If you’re taking over the world, that might tickle cause your widdle and furry….hehe.

  11. Some humans even turn up their noses at small dogs like us.

  12. That’s why I love interviewing small pets. And I love reading your blog. I need to get another small pets month together so I can highlight the little pets.

  13. All pets matter! Woooooowooooooooo! 🙂

  14. We have fishes, and they are super fun to watch around the tank. Sometimes I stand next to mummy when she feeds them incase she needs any food hoovered up:-)

  15. doodz….we iz knot pawsitive….fish wood last round heer two long !!!

    lunch brake 🙂

  16. I think one reason small pets have become more popular is because some people may get the notion that they are easier to care for. Which is true for some of them. I LOVE small pets! I get the feeling that these guys may be just a little more popular overseas in the UK though. Especially rats.

    • Whee are furry popular pets in the UK and the industry is growing which our hooman is pleased to see. A lot more information is available now too which is great to educate those who think whee are easy!

  23. ALL pets and animals matter. they are people with four legs. 🙂 or people are animals with 2 legs.

  24. Of course small pet matter, If they don’t then why would people have them as pets? All pets matter regardless of size, especially if you choose to have them as your pet they become more than just animals. I have 3 small dogs and they are already family to me, They will become a big part of your live and you will value them as if they were your own children.
