Firework Fear Friday

First of all, as requested, here is our pumpkin. Named Lucifer:

Anyway, I’m sad to say that this Saturday is not going to be the nicest one. Whee had such a great time at Hallo-wheek, it’s unfair to follow it up with this! Firework night. Fun for hoomans, not fun for furries. Whee piggies are very small so any loud sudden noise is terrifying for us. As prey animals whee are very good at hiding fear and stress but sudden things like fireworks can cause us to show the following signs of stress:

  • Darting around, running at the walls
  • Or freezing and staying completely still
  • Wide, wild eyes
  • Stiffened body
  • Rapid breathing, almost panting
  • Hiding in a corner head first. The if-whee-can’t-see-the-scary-thing, it-can’t-see-us mentality!
  • Digging at the floor trying to cover ourselves with hay or bedding.

If you see these it’s best not to try to handle us because you could make it worse. Instead, if you are fully prepared you can make sure whee don’t get stressed and scared. Firstly, you should check when your local displays are. This means you can make sure you are ready in time.

  • Hutches/cages should be brought into a quiet room indoors, or into a garage or shed.
  • If you cannot bring our hutch inside, you should turn it around so that it faces a wall or fence instead of the open garden. But really this is only if there is absolutely no other choice.
  • Provide extra hideys and things to do. Hay stuffed tubes, veggies, herbs and cardboard boxes etc. make good distractions. Extra bedding for burrowing into is furry impawtent too.
  • Play some low level soothing music, or louder music to disguise the sounds of the fireworks. In the days leading up to firework night you can play music to get us used to it. Whee almost always have the radio playing or the tv on so whee are comforted by the noises.
  • Black out the windows and put the lights on. That way bright flashes won’t frighten us. If you cannot black out the windows it may be worth putting a thick blanket over the cage to block out the worst of it and give a sort of secure feel.
Me demonstrating my relaxed pose for when the fireworks don't bother me!

Lots of people think about the effect of fireworks on cats and dogs because the results are far more obvious but please think of your small furries before you leave to watch a display. Whee worry too.

  1. I agree with you, fireworks are annoying for all anipals. We would be much happier without the Boom&Bang… and even the staff of the ER had better times without that darned stuff.

  2. Another thing to block the flashes is to simply leave the lights on. White noise can also help.

Love that cute relaxed pose Nacho dude. 🙂

  3. Yikes I will be spending quite a bit of time behind the sofa. Have a fabulous Friday.
    Best wishes Molly

  4. And then you think of all the birds and wild animals who will be having a terrible time. Why is it necessary we often wonder.

  5. I hope all the piggies will be ok. I wish there were no fireworks. Not a fan. Our horses went crazy on the 4th and New Year’s Eve when I had them. I would like to see fireworks not made anymore. Take care Boys!

  6. Love your pumpkin. Dad told us he saw some like that on Facebook. Hope you piggies stay safe, calm and secure tonight. Purrs and hugs, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

  7. Love the boarder 🙂 Forgot we had all those fireworks to contend with, and they go on for days. Stay safe everyone xxooxxx

    Mollie and Alfie

  8. My sister Katie is scared of fireworks too, I could care less.

  9. Wish we could cuddle and comfort youwooowooooo!

  10. If you’re going to play music, don’t make it the 1812 Overture.

  11. Judy & C.A.T.S.

These are good tips. We hopez you made it thru the firewurks without stress.

We live in the U.S. Hoomanz around here start celebrating July 4th in mid June and keep going until mid July. Itz hard on our nerves when hoomanz set off firewurks everyday. Love, Cali, Andy, Tater and Shelly (C.A.T.S)

  12. Oh guys I think you are in the BEST of hands because your hoomans know just how to keep you as calm as possible through all the noise. I’m sorry you have to have all that to worry about but no doubt you’ll be made as comfy and safe as any four furries could ever be! Wear your earplugs!

    Kitty Hugs, Sammy
peee ess Lucifer is way cool!

  13. da tabbies o trout towne

  14. Smart tips, Nacho. These tips will help lots of tiny friends to be less afraid. Good luck.

    Love and licks,

  15. Aww love your relaxed pose! =^.^=

  16. I am so sorry that you are going to have to endure the fireworks. They are so obnoxious. They don’t really bother me too much, but they terrified my late canine sister, Lexi. And then I got worried about Lexi, and then my humans got upset with the crazy, selfish fireworks people. It was a mess. We’ll be thinking of you.

    • If it was just one big public display and then over it would be easier to deal with but it goes on for wheeks and there are lots of different display and home pawties. Not fun for furries at all

  17. princess guinea and ariel

well, nacho u look very relaxed on top of your house there!

  18. Hope it wasn’t too bad for you guys. We had loads last night and tonight is the town display which is in the park behind our house. Think we’re in for a week of it

    • Whee have Guy Fawke’s Night, also known as Bonfire Night to celebrate when a man named Guy Fawkes almost blew up the houses of parliament and whee let fireworks off. Mummy says it’s any excuse for a pawty and making lots of noise!

  20. Typist had he radio up full blast at the weekend to try and drown them out!
